Taking off from Pemba Airport and heading north towards Vamizi Private Island, the atmosphere on our private charter flight was one of sheer excitement and anticipation. In fact to say I was excited at the prospect of staying at Vamizi Private Island for three nights is an understatement of note.
This was a serious bucket-list experience!!
Arriving at the the lodge we were welcomed with a refreshing cocktail and given an introduction by our hosts to our villa and an overview of what lay ahead on our island paradise for the next few days. We were treated to a mouth-watering seafood dinner and after having spent much of the day travelling we were all rather weary and retired to our villas for an early night.
We spent the next morning snorkelling, which was followed by a delicious alfresco lunch on the beach.
We also had a chance to see some of the other villas. Each has a very unique feel from modern and trendy to laid back barefoot luxury to bohemian.
Early one morning I had a yoga session with the resident yoga instructor. You can’t ask for a more perfect location, feeling the soft warmth of the sun on your skin, listening to the birds calling mixed with the smell of the ocean, I was in heaven. We also fitted in a cultural tour of the two villages on the island. The main village has a wonderful history, complete with a church which dates back to the 15th century.
In addition we enjoyed a sunset dhow cruise followed by a delicious beach barbecue.
On our last morning we did a two hour walk around the island, which landed up being one of the highlights for me. The diversity on the island is something I wasn’t prepared for; I was blown away by its beauty and I was even treated to a sighting of a Mangrove Kingfisher.
Vamizi has so much and more to offer; come and see it for yourself.
