“Look at those elephants mum, they are so quiet, they look like ghosts in the moonlight.” This was my daughter and we were enjoying sundowners at Kwandwe Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. The elephant would have gone unnoticed were it not for her sharp eyes in the fast dimming evening light.
Kwandwe is ideal for families for several reasons not the least of which is that it is malaria free. We were staying at Kwandwe Fish River, situated high up above the river with lovely gorge views. Rooms are suitably luxurious with plunge pools – a real win in summer – and outdoor showers which are exciting at any time of the year. Of the four lodges situated on this enormous private reserve (22,000 hectares), two are only offered on a private basis so are ideal for small groups and families. Kwandwe Ecca is a bright modern lodge, fenced (to keep guests in rather than animals out I suspect!) with nannies on tap to look after your offspring whilst you take a well-earned nap.
Kwandwe is not just for families. Everyone will enjoy the superb food which is beautifully presented and innovative whilst the wines available are from some of South Africa’s best estates. Service is excellent and nothing is too much trouble. Romance abounds at Fish River Lodge; I noticed several honeymoon and other couples.
Visitors to Kwandwe will find all the big game here and plenty of it, as well as a host of plains game and a wonderfully varied bird life.
I think it also worth mentioning that in the peak of the South African summer when the temperatures reach over 40 in the Kruger area , Kwandwe is cooler and more tolerable to those who do not enjoy the heat.
Its a perfect combination really.
