Mountain Gorilla Trekking

There are few wildlife experiences on Earth as moving and unforgettable as mountain gorilla trekking. Deep in the misty highlands of East Africa, you can come face-to-face with one of our closest animal relatives – the endangered mountain gorilla. With their expressive eyes, powerful presence, and complex social behaviour, these gentle giants leave a lasting impression on all who encounter them.

Where to Go for Mountain Gorilla Trekking

Mountain gorilla trekking is only possible in a few places on the planet. The two best-known and most accessible destinations are Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. Both parks are located in the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanic peaks straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Trekking here means hiking deep into dense rainforests, often on steep and narrow footpaths. The terrain can be challenging, and the trek can take anywhere from 1 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are on any given day. You’ll follow an expert tracker, who leads you through the undergrowth, searching for signs of the gorilla families.

The Gorillas: Gentle Giants of the Forest

Mountain gorillas live in social groups of 2 to 40 individuals, led by a dominant male known as the silverback. The silverback makes all the key decisions for the group – from where to eat to when to move and rest. These gorillas eat up to 18kg of vegetation each day and spend much of their time foraging for food. So rare and well-protected are mountain gorillas that trackers know many of them by name. Each gorilla has a distinct face and personality – some shy, some playful, others curious. During your time with the gorillas, you might see babies tumbling around, mothers disciplining their young, and the mighty silverback keeping watch with quiet authority.

Their expressions, their gestures, even the way they look at you – it all feels so human. This is what makes mountain gorilla trekking such a profound and personal experience.

When to Go Mountain Gorilla Trekking

The best time for mountain gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons, from June to September and December to February. These months typically offer easier hiking conditions, with less rain and clearer forest trails. However, gorilla trekking is considered a year-round activity, and the experience remains magical even during the wetter months. Just be prepared for muddier trails!

What to Know Before You Go

  • The minimum age for mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is 15 years.
  • Only a limited number of trekking permits are issued each day to protect the gorillas and minimize human impact, so it’s essential to book well in advance.
  • You’ll spend a maximum of one hour with the gorillas once they are located.
  • Permits can be costly, but the fees directly support conservation efforts and local communities.
