I recently had the privilege of staying at Jamala lodge in Madikwe and my time there was nothing short of magnificent. On top of the incredible game drives, I could enjoy what is aptly called a “sofa safari”—a leisurely way to witness incredible wildlife encounters from the privacy of the suite’s deck or the lodge’s main viewing platform.
The lodge overlooks a nearby waterhole, a magnet for wildlife. With a drink in hand, I watched as herds of elephant, the rare black and white rhino, and even lions approached to quench their thirst. There are few places in Africa where such majestic wildlife scenes unfold so effortlessly before your eyes.

Madikwe Game Reserve is malaria-free, making it an excellent choice for families or travellers looking for a hassle-free safari experience without the need for medication. Beyond its convenience, Madikwe is home to the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo—as well as an array of other remarkable species, including wild dog and cheetah.
What makes Madikwe particularly special is its free-ranging rhino population, a rarity in Africa due to the ongoing poaching crisis. Seeing these magnificent creatures roam freely, unencumbered by fences, barriers and anti-poaching units, was an awe-inspiring experience and a testament to the reserve’s dedication to conservation.
